Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport (MSY) offers several transport options connecting the airport with downtown New Orleans and surrounding areas. While there is no direct rail connection, passengers can choose between taxis, ride-hailing services, buses, shuttles, and rental cars depending on budget and convenience.
The French Quarter and downtown (CBD) are about 20–30 minutes away—plan ahead, especially at night or during major events in the city.
Taxis & Ride-Hailing (Uber / Lyft)
Taxis are available 24/7 and can be found on the first level of the terminal, outside Baggage Claim areas (Belts 1 to 14). Passengers must queue at official taxi booths before boarding.
Main taxi companies operating at MSY include Alliance, American Taxi, Coleman Cab, Nawlins Cab, and Yellow Cab. All taxis accept credit cards, although it is recommended to confirm with the driver before starting the trip.
Flat fares apply to the most popular destinations:
- $36 to downtown New Orleans (CBD) or French Quarter (up to 2 passengers)
- $15 per additional passenger (for groups of 3 or more)
Ride-hailing services such as Uber and Lyft operate from designated pickup zones and offer shared ride options.
If you are traveling in a group of 3–4 people, taxis are often cheaper than Uber or Lyft.
Buses & Public Transport
MSY is connected to the city by two main public bus services:
JET (Jefferson Transit) – Route E2 Airport-Downtown Express
This route connects the airport (Kenner) with downtown New Orleans via Airline Drive. Travel time is approximately 50 minutes, and the fare is around $2.
Important: This service operates mainly on weekdays and only runs to downtown until early evening.
RTA (Regional Transit Authority) – Airport Express 202
This route connects the airport with downtown stops such as Elk Place and Union Passenger Terminal. Ticket price is approximately $1.25.
Bus stops are located on the outer lanes of Level 2, outside Concourse C.
Public buses are the cheapest option but less practical with luggage or late arrivals.
Shuttle Services
Airport shuttle services provide shared rides to hotels and major destinations such as the French Quarter, Convention Center, and downtown areas. These are especially popular with tourists.
Courtesy shuttles for hotels and off-site parking operate from the Ground Transportation Center, outside Baggage Claim doors 1 to 5.
Typical prices range from $20 to $30 depending on the destination.
Shuttles are a good compromise between cost and convenience, especially for solo travelers.
Train / Rail Connections
There is no direct train or metro connection from MSY Airport. However, passengers can access rail services by traveling to the nearest station:
- New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal (Amtrak)
- Location: 1001 Loyola Avenue, downtown New Orleans
To reach the station, passengers must use taxi, shuttle, or bus services from the airport.
If you plan to travel by train, allow extra transfer time (at least 1 hour total).
Car Rental
The Rental Car Center is located on-site at MSY and is easily accessible from the terminal. Major companies such as Hertz, Avis, Enterprise, and Budget operate here.
